AGNIPATH SCHEME & IT'S POTENTIAL IMPLICATIONS
The Central Government has recently cleared the Agni path scheme as Anti-Agni path protests turned violent in many parts of the country. The Details of Agni path scheme are The Centre has launched the Agni path initiative for short-term recruiting of soldiers in the three. branches of the armed services, in a "transformative" military recruitment reform. The recruiting process will begin in 90 days, with a projected intake of 46,000 young men and women. This year This will be the only way for soldiers to join the three defines services from now on. The Background of Agni path was
BACKGROUND
The idea of a short-term recruitment model or Tour of Duty' (ToD) was first floated roughly two years ago for the selection of officers and jawans for a restricted number of vacancies. With the goal of diverting resources for military upgrading. General Bipin Rawat, the then-Chief of Defence Staff, officially stated that the forces were considering the ToD model.
Key Features: Under the program, young people aged 175 to 21 will be enlisted as soldiers for four years on a "All-India All-Class’s basis. In the respective forces, these recruits will be known as Agniveers, and will form a distinct rank with a distinct insignia. They will not be entitled for any of the scheme's pension benefits. The previous framework for army employment will be abolished, and individuals below the level of officer - jawans in the Army, sailors in the Navy, and airmen in the Air Force will be recruited into the three services through the Agni path plan. The plan does not apply to defence officers who are eligible for the Short Duty Commission, or SSC, which provides short-term service.
Training
Agniveers will be trained in current military training centres according to the requirements of the service they join and the duty they are assigned. The training will last up to six months, after which an Agni veer will be deployed for the next The Chief of Army Staff has stated that trained Agniveers will be permitted to deploy on the. three and a half years. Pakistani and Chinese borders.
The selection procedure:
For enrolment of Agniveers with specialised rallies and campus interviews from technical colleges such as industrial training institutes, an online centralised system will be employed (ITIS). The military forces will have sole authority over the selection, according to the three services
Potential implications
Expected Advantages:
The scheme aims to boost national security while also giving young people the option to serve in the military. Over time, the move is expected to reduce the average age profile of armed forces personnel from 32 to 24-26 years.
The Armed Forces would be more energetic and youthful. The growing pension bill for the armed personnel has been a key source of concern for the Defence Ministry. The scheme is expected to reduce the pension load on the defence budget.
It offers once-in-a-lifetime opportunities for young people to serve their country and contribute to national progress.
The Agniveers would be paid generously and given the opportunity to train in the best military ethos in civil society and institutions while also upgrading their skills and certifications. As a result, civil society will have well-trained and skilled youth with a military mindset.
The scheme's recruits will be known as "Agniveers." They can apply for regular employment in the military forces after completing their four-year service. They may be given preference over others for jobs in other government agencies.
Concerns Raised:
Several defence experts have expressed concern about the Agni path concept and the future of Agniveers, urging the government to fix the gaps that could jeopardize the defence services capabilities. Tod has not been tested, there will be no pilot project, and it will be implemented immediately.
The scheme will lead to the militarization of society, with roughly 40,000 (75 percent) kids being rejected and depressed without a job year after year, and ex-Agniveers being semi-trained in weaponry, according to a senior army official.
Core moral is important
Military life and career can't be measured by money saved to the exchequer. There are concerns whether their ethos, morale and motivation will be strong enough and comparable to those who serve for longer periods of time.
The soldier will only have a very short period to serve after training, annual leaves and pre-release procedures, which is insufficient time to instil regimental culture, allegiance, and discipline.
The countries like USA etc are following this kind recruitment system but many war evidenced that US army was lake of moral and professional efficiency on the ground like Vietnam war were Vietnam won the war and in the Afghanistan issue USA assumed to be lost not only it Russia is been struggling for 4 months to conquer Ukraine but it is not happening.
So, the way forward There is a need to take a balanced approach and wait for the first four years, then review and make recommendations to the government. India need modernisation of weapons and moral & professional efficiency of solders on the ground .
