Story of Operation Cactus

Today Maldives has forgotten Operation Cactus, when India saved Maldives from coup,

In 1978, Maumoon Abdul Gayoom became president of Maldives, amidst economic troubles and political instability. In 1988 his Government faced a coup attempt, the coup was the brainchild of Maldivian businessman Abdullah Luthufee and Ahmed “Sagaru” Nasir, supported by Uma Maheswaran, leader of the People’s Liberation Organisation of Tamil Eelam (PLOTE), a militant Lankan Tamil organization They managed to gain control of Maldives’ capital Male, including major government buildings, the port and TV and radio station. As the coup unfolded, SOS messages were sent to countries across the world.

As India is a neighbor of Maldives, India reacted to this SOS and decided to give help to Maldives as soon as possible( India following its Policy of Neighbour first and Peace and Rule-based order in the region

In response to this call India Launched "Operation Cactus"

Operation Cactus began on 3 November 1988, when an Ilyushin-76 transport aircraft airlifted a detachment of the 50th Independent Parachute Brigade 6th Battalion of the Parachute Regiment and the 17th Parachute Field Regiment. Under the command of Brigadier Frukh Bulsara. The detachments flew from Agra to Malé, landing at the Malé International Airport on Hulhule Island.

The Indian paratroopers, with swift and accurate intelligence, secured the Malé International Airport, rescued President Gayoom, and swiftly regained control of the capital, defeating the coup and restoring the government's authority. The operation resulted in the capture of the mercenaries and the repatriation of the captured individuals for trial in the Maldives Later, Indian Navy Frigates intercepted the hijacked freighter that brought in the mercenary force off the Sri Lankan Coast.

It shows How India plays an important role in the Indian Ocean region (IOR) and acts as a key player in the region
